Destination Video Australia
May 08, 2007
Last week I lectured in Melbourne, Australia at the PMA Australia 2007 Imaging Technology Expo. My lecture on Thursday covered some of the hottest trends in wedding and event video production and on Friday I held a mini hands-on workshop. Then, I was off to Sydney where I shot a beautiful Jewish wedding in Centennial Park. The reception was at Luna Park, just at the foot of Sydney’s Harbor Bridge.
This video is a behind-the-scenes look through the lens of my small palmcorder that I brought along. On my way to Melbourne, I had some time in Los Angeles to visit and have dinner with my friend David Robin of Boulevard Video Productions. The first message on the video is from Dave to an Australian videographer named Dennis Illic.
Next, it was off to Melbourne where I connected with fellow lecturers Chris Chibucos of Furlavision Productions, Natalie Neal of Glass Slipper Productions, Jenny Lehman of Jenny Lehman Film and Video, Eng Tiong Teo of Pilgrim Pictures, Ross Herewini of efilms, and WEVA‘s director of marketing, John Zale.
And finally, I took a short flight to Sydney for some sight-seeing with my blokes and to shoot a wedding with Dave and Troy of D’nM Video Productions

tracy parton: (05.09.07-4:06pm) Hi Dave,

I was at the WEVA sessions you held recently in Australia and just wanted to say a huge thank you for your input. You've given me inspiration to take my business to a whole new level. Your sessions were most enjoyable and informative and I'm seriously thinking of attending next year in Los Vegas.

Thanks again
Tracy Parton
Dave: (05.09.07-4:08pm) Hi Dave,

I hope that your trip home went smoothly and that the jet lag doesn't hit you too hard!

Firstly, I want to say thank you so much for coming down to Australia. Having heard about you on EventDV, read your blog, listened to the wedvidtalk podcasts etc - we were pretty excited to have you here. To learn that you're also a top bloke made the experience even better!
You're most certainly welcome back anytime!

Thanks again.
Dave
Roy Chapman: (05.09.07-4:12pm) Dave,

I knew it, now I've seen it.... You all are simply having too much fun down under!!! And making history for our association and our industry worldwide in the process. AWESOME.

I am only disappointed that I could not be there with you as planned..... next time.

Can't wait to talk to you and all of our team members when you get back to the USA. Below is some of the great feedback already emerging.

G'day mate!
RC

Roy Chapman
Wedding & Event Videographers Association International (WEVA)
www.weva.com
941-923-5334
F. 941-921-3836

From the WEVA Forums

"WEVA DOWN UNDER at PMA AUSTRALIA 2007"

Posted by LyntonBrown on May-05-07 at 08:14 AM

Not a lot to say about the PMA Expo 2007 other then the people who attended the WEVA Seminars came away with NEW TOOLS, IDEAS, TIPS and Tricks brought to us on a silver platter direct from USA, Singapore and Australia.

All our questions were answered with honest answers. All the tutors were straight down the line, no rubbish, they love their job and they know how to make good money.
I believe they enjoyed telling us their secrets and stories to success as much as we enjoyed listening and taking notes.

The video presentations from all tutors were jaw dropping, and "how did they do that with one camera... or how was that effect done," were all answered, I wish we had more time.
What we gained is what other members have missed out.

If you were a beginner you would have had a pretty steep learning curve during the seminars, if you've been doing weddings for a while it would have been right up your alley.

It has made me look at my business outside the square and in a whole new perspective; The WEVA tutors have given me new tools to sell myself, job costing, presentation and most of all the challenge to try new ideas. Yes my head is still spinning and I've already corrected a few things on my Smooth Shooter.
Finally I'd like to personally thank Ross Herewini from EFILMS VIDEO PRODUCTIONS, Jenny Lehman from JENNY LEHMAN FILM and VIDEO, Chris Chibucos from FURLA VISION VIDEO PRODUCTIONS, Dave Williams from DVIDEOGRAPHY, The lovely Natalie Neal from GLASS SLIPPER PRODUCTIONS, Teo Eng Tiong from PILGRIM PICTURES PTY LTD, John Zale Director of Educational Development WEVA, PMA AUSTRALIA and all those who attended and learnt something new in these classes.

Lynton Brown
Browns Video Photography
Horsham, Victoria.
dave: (05.25.07-4:04am) Hi Dave,

I had a quick look through Troy's footage of the wedding we shot - looking for decent shots of us working, but Troy was focused on the couple and I couldn't see anything suitable. However, in March I went out with Troy and I filmed a lot of stuff of him filming. We had an idea to do a behind-the-scenes clip for his blog. He's just up to loading their footage this week - so I've asked him to pull out a clip of me-shooting-him-shooting-the-bride. So we should have something for you soon.

I presume you'll need to convert it to NTSC.

I also wanted to say thank you from me and my family. Bear with me here ...

I'm sure you often inspire other videographers with your work - and it would be common to see your influence in the people you've trained and taught in your seminars. I'm sure that you have already influenced some of what I'm doing and will do with weddings too. Last week, I took my family to Queensland for a holiday on the Gold Coast. I put together a video which was kind of inspired by your family video of your Disneyworld trip.

Since I finished the video 2 days ago - my kids have watched it pretty much non-stop. My wife Michelle and I are getting such a huge kick out of how much the kids are enjoying re-living their holiday.

I'm really happy with how it came up. But it wouldn't have been nearly as good if I hadn't watched your clip first. So I wanted to say a huge thank you for the inspiration!

If you're interested in seeing the clip it's here ...

... next I need to upgrade my panasonic to a sony hd handycam!

Cheers,
Dave.

P.S. We had dinner last night with 7 Sydney-based video producers (including Ross Herewini, Troy and you may remember the other Ross from Cine Media). At the moment, there's no local association in Sydney - so the meeting last night was the first step towards starting one. I'm pretty excited about getting it started.
Shanty: (05.25.07-5:55am) Heya Dave,

How’s everything going after coming back from Australia?
Did you have a good time shooting the Sydney wedding?
I’ve seen your DVD about smooth shooter.
Boy, if I have a chance, I surely like to come to your studio and learn those techniques.

Here are the pics of your Melbourne travel.

Take care and keep in touch!

Cheers,
Shanty
Hitman Jr: (05.28.07-3:02pm) Hey Dave, love the video! Thanks for sharing.

Brian
